The Fortress of Risnov
(2006)
Risnov Fortress
Risnov Fortress lies some 10 km from Poiana Brasov, a famous ski resort. The fortress is a picturesque place, with ramparts, bastions, and old dwellings.

The beginnings of the fortress might date back to around 1211, when the Teutonic Order was invited into Burzenland by Hungarian King Andrew II to protect the kingdom's eastern borders from pagan invasions. In 1224, however, the Knights petitioned the Pope to be placed under his authority, which didn't sit well with the Hungarian king. They were expelled in 1225 after having built, it is believed, several fortresses in Transylvania. The one at Risnov might have been one of them. If it hasn't been started by the Teutonic Knights, it was started sometime after the first Tartar raid into Transylvania in 1241.

The fortress is first documented in 1335 (or 1331). In 1640 it has its own fountain, due to the efforts of two Turkish prisoners who, legend says, dug the fountain well for 17 years. The 17th century is also the time when the fortress was most inhabited due to the intensification of the Turkish and Tartar raids in Transylvania. The fountain itself was used until 1850.

The fortress also had a chapel; erected in 1640, it lasted only until 1802 when it collapsed during an earthquake. It also had a school building, which can be seen in one of the photos presented here.

The citadel of Risnov was abandoned after the Revolution of 1848.

Shown here is the old school, with an 18th-century sculpture of the Crucifixion.
