These churches, dating from the 15th-16th centuries, have frescoes painted on the interior and -- all but one -- on the exterior. Seven of these churches are World Heritage sites. One of the most visited fortified Saxon church in Transylvania, the church of Biertan is remarkable for its three precincts and watchtowers, as well as for its 16th-century altarpiece, church pews and door. Here are some pictures of the citadel and church at Biertan. In 1999 the site of "Biertan and its fortified church" was extended to include fortified 13th-16th century churches in several villages -- and the villages themselves -- in the counties of counties of Alba, Brasov, Harghita, Mures, and Sibiu.
