One of the most visited fortified Saxon church in Transylvania, Biertan is remarkable for its three precincts and watchtowers, as well as for its 16th-century altarpiece, church pews and door. Documented since 1283, it was included on the UNESCO World Heritage List due to its being "the best surviving and most representative example of a fortified church, of which there were once many in medieval Europe," as the report of 1990 had it. Here are some pictures of the citadel and church at Biertan. In 1999 the site of "Biertan and its fortified church" was extended to include fortified 13th-16th century churches in several villages -- and the villages themselves -- in the counties of counties of Alba, Brasov, Harghita, Mures, and Sibiu.
