Painted monastery churches of northern Moldavia (northeastern Romania)

These churches, dating from the 15th-16th centuries, have frescoes painted on the interior and -- all but one -- on the exterior. Seven of these churches are World Heritage sites. All but Arbore and Pătrăuţi are monastery churches. The church of Suceviţa is not yet a World Heritage site but its frescoes, especially the Ladder of Virtue, are just as impressive.

Biertan

One of the most visited fortified Saxon church in Transylvania, the church of Biertan is remarkable for its three precincts and watchtowers, as well as for its 16th-century altarpiece, church pews and door. Documented since 1283, it was included on the UNESCO World Heritage List due to its being "the best surviving and most representative example of a fortified church, of which there were once many in medieval Europe," as the report of 1990 had it. Here are some pictures of the citadel and church at Biertan. In 1999 the site of "Biertan and its fortified church" was extended to include fortified 13th-16th century churches in several villages -- and the villages themselves -- in the counties of counties of Alba, Brasov, Harghita, Mures, and Sibiu.
